After more than a year of confirming that a nonpsychoactive component of marijuana which is known as cannabidiol (CBD) can reduce epileptic seizures, a medication has finally been formulated. GW Pharmaceuticals, a British drugmaker is behind Epidiolex which does not contain THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) – the psychoactive element which gives the high feeling for users.
A panel of 13 advisors has reached a conclusion that the benefit and risk possibilities are in control of treating seizures. Although there isn’t a final approval yet, the FDA staff has shown their support for the said medicine upon the result of the clinical trials.
In connection to that, GW Pharmaceuticals has clearly shown in their company website the two distinct programs they did while developing the drug which are FD-authorized clinical trials program and FDA-authorized, independent Physician-led program or Expanded Access. The eligible patients for the trial are randomly assigned. Meaning, each of the patients wouldn’t know if they will be receiving Placebo or Epidiolex. It is also cited that, “Target indications currently include Dravet syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, and Infantile Spasms.”
According to the FDA’s internal review, there were a few seizures observed in patients subject to the treatment. In the three studies conducted that involve about 500 individuals, it was estimated that about 40% of the monthly seizures were reduced with the use of Epidiolex.
It can also be remembered that over a year ago, there has been a rampant interest in the use of cannabidiol for treating epileptic seizures wherein a total of 120 children and teenagers that has Dravet syndrome were used as an experimental group. The promising results that rise from then on have been a significant influence on the perseverance of the medical experts to thrive and formulate something out of cannabidiol.
There have also been reports that an 11-year old boy named Billy Caldwell that has intractable epilepsy didn’t have seizures for 300 days since using the prescribed medical marijuana product that can be purchased at Canna Buddies. The same thing happened with Charlotte Figi, an 8-year old girl with Dravet syndrome. With the aid of the cannabis oil, seizures stopped and she was able to ride her bike, walk and talk as well.
Even though there were a lot of good feedbacks about Epidiolex, the approval is still unsure until FDA reached its final decision on June 27.
