iAsiaWorks Deploys Asia's Most-Advanced Data Center Power Design
Piller UPS to guarantee continuous services and operating efficiency
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 15, 2001 ) iAsiaWorks [Nasdaq: IAWK], a leading provider of hosting services in the Asia-Pacific region, is deploying Asia's most-advanced Internet data center (IDC) power design at three new IDCs in Hong Kong, Seoul, Korea and Taipei, Taiwan. The unique power design, with Piller Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) at its core, is engineered to set a new standard in the Asia-Pacific region for IDC reliability and continuous Internet services. Piller is an industry leader in the design and implementation of uninterrupted power supply systems .
iAsiaWorks is the first hosting provider to deploy Piller UPS systems across the region. The Piller systems will deliver significant energy savings and simplified maintenance over the life of the equipment.
"The deployment of Piller UPS systems reflects iAsiaWorks' commitment to providing Asia-Pacific customers with advanced Internet infrastructure and a reliable hosting environment," said JoAnn Patrick-Ezzell, iAsiaWorks chairman and CEO. "We are enhancing performance and reliability for our customers, while enhancing operating efficiency and cost savings for iAsiaWorks."
iAsiaWorks' new IDCs in Hong Kong, Seoul and Taipei will provide a total of 300,000 gross square feet of new, carrier-class data center space in Asia. The IDCs are engineered to deliver gigabit speeds, 99.999 percent reliability, and levels of security, availability and redundancy not commonly available in the Asia-Pacific region. The IDCs in Hong Kong and Taiwan formally launch later this month. The Korea IDC will open at the end of the first quarter, 2001.
Technical Information About iAsiaWorks' Power Systems Design
iAsiaWorks' Internet data center power design is engineered to deliver unparalleled uptime and exceptional performance through:
"2N" design. Two completely redundant paths from utility hand-off to customer equipment. Greatly increases uptime (maintenance and upgrades can be performed without disrupting power), enables customers to connect equipment to two separate power systems simultaneously.
Isolated Redundancy ("N 1" design). All UPS modules operate in the stand-alone mode, and an isolated redundant UPS module runs off-load, ready to assume full load automatically and seamlessly should another module fail or need maintenance. Ensures full redundancy right up to the load.
Piller UPS technology. Guarantees continuous, high quality, computer-grade power. Unique features of Piller UPS include:
Brushless synchronous motors and generators to correct voltage fluctuations and reactive currents, and compensate load harmonics. Can compensate permanent under-voltages of up to 20 percent without diesel support (reducing the number of diesel starts by a factor of 30 compared to conventional systems).
Integrated dynamic energy-storage modules (a synchronous generator and a vertical flywheel). These POWERBRIDGES have storage capacities of 16,5 MWs each and provide a 12s ride-trough time of the IDC power, to allow a smooth diesel start. Eliminates disadvantages of battery-operated systems (including expensive maintenance, aging and temperature dependency).
Coupling chokes compensate all mains input voltage interference and prevent system perturbation due to disturbance caused by the loads.
Integral link of rotary UPS to diesel engine to ensure independent power supply over almost unlimited time period.

Forward-Looking Statements
This press release may contain forward-looking statements, including statements related to the growth in iAsiaWorks' business and revenues. Actual results may differ from expectations due to a number of factors, including: iAsiaWorks' recent shift in strategic focus to dedicated hosting, co-location and managed services; iAsiaWorks' inability to successfully build new Internet data centers; iAsiaWorks' inability to greatly expand its existing customer base; the operational challenges of developing, deploying and delivering iAsiaWorks' services in a relatively new and evolving market with uncertain prospects for growth; competition from new and existing competitors; iAsiaWorks' inability to manage rapid growth in operations and personnel; the inability to raise capital in the future; the risk of not being able to obtain adequate connectivity from third party providers; the political, legal and economic climate in the Asia-Pacific region, which is volatile, uncertain and subject to change; underdeveloped telecommunications and Internet infrastructure; currency fluctuations; and the inability to open new Internet data centers and deliver services when requested by our customers. The matters discussed in this press release also involve risks and uncertainties as described in iAsiaWorks' public filings with the SEC.
