Xplore Communications, Raystown Wireless Internet and WaveRider bring wireless broadband to Pennsylvania
-- Whether at work or at play, residents and visitors to Central Pennsylvania’s most popular resort community
(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 03, 2005 ) TORONTO – WaveRider Communications Inc. (OTC BB: WAVR), the leader in non-line-of-sight wireless broadband technology and deployments, today announced that Xplore Communications and Raystown Wireless have established a strategic alliance to establish a community-wide high-speed Internet network in central Pennsylvania using WaveRider’s wireless broadband products.
The alliance is now delivering high-speed Internet access to homes and businesses in Altoona, PA and to the Raystown Lake area in central Pennsylvania. Xplore launched its service in August, 2004 and now includes insurance agencies, an accounting firm and a local television and radio station among its business subscribers. The company expects to grow its customer base quickly as it fulfills the demand from area businesses and residents that have been seeking reliable high-speed Internet access.
“Xplore’s wireless network delivers reliable, high-speed connections and has made broadband Internet services accessible to everyone within our service area,” said John Noonan, Xplore Communications. “With WaveRider’s wireless systems, we were able to rapidly build our network and can now quickly and easily add new subscribers and deliver immediate high-speed services.”
At the Seven Points Recreation Area and the Lake Raystown Resort and Lodge, Xplore is working closely with Raystown Wireless to deliver and manage broadband wireless service to the resort and its visitors.
“The terrain surrounding the Raystown Lake area presents a challenge to delivering high-speed services,” said Pauline Hetrick, Raystown Wireless. “By establishing a strategic alliance with Xplore and choosing WaveRider’s non-line-of-sight wireless systems, we are able to deliver broadband services throughout the entire Raystown Lake area and provide advanced applications, including data, voice and video services, which are quickly becoming standard offerings for service providers.” Raystown Wireless and Xplore are also delivering high-speed services to marinas and campgrounds on Raystown Lake to connect boaters and campers from popular locations around the Lake.
“WaveRider is continually enhancing our wireless systems to deliver the features and capabilities required to enable companies like Xplore and Raystown to immediately respond to the communications needs in their communities,” said Charles Brown, Chief Executive Officer, WaveRider Communications Inc. “By establishing area-wide wireless broadband networks today, service providers can establish their market position and continue to grow over time by delivering the advanced services their subscribers need.”
Challenging Environment
Xplore’s network includes three wireless base stations, each covering a 17-mile radius, over a densely-treed and mountainous region. The company has used WaveRider’s EUM3006 integrated outdoor modem and antennas that deliver robust non-line-of-sight connections to maximize the throughput and range.
“The line-of-sight barriers in this region make it impossible to deploy an establish reliable connections with many wireless technologies. WaveRider’s wireless systems are designed to overcome these barriers and after rigorous testing and initial customer deployments, have already proven to outperform other systems,” said John Noonan.
