Wireless Spectrum - Outlook on Major Future Releases
(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 29, 2004 ) CEDAR KNOLLS, NJ -- Wireless spectrum has underpinned the major gains in value in telecommunications in the past decade.
"The FCC has been mired in some tedious proceedings," said Victor Schnee president of Probe Financial Associates, "but they are making progress and literally hundreds of MHz's of spectrum could become available in the next 2-5 years.
"The 3G (advanced wireless services) dockets now involve 110MHz and these proceedings are definitely moving ahead." Schnee added. "While broadcasters have impeded the UHF 700 auction, we expect that situation to change. The UHF spectrum is particularly desirable because of its robust propagation characteristics. In addition to the auctions which will eventually put about 60MHz spectrum into telecom uses, the FCC is pushing for unlicensed use of about 276MHz of TV spectrum. These developments could remake the industry over a 3-5 year period."
PFA's new report, "Spectrum Auctions: How Much, How Soon?" analyzes the crucial spectrum proceedings of the FCC and their financial impact on the industry.
