Valentine's Day Greeting Card Sites Shot Down By Cupid's Arrow, Keynote Reports
Valentine's Day E-Commerce Site Performance and Fulfillment Ranges From "Hot Stuff" to "So Slow" or "No Show"
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 15, 2001 ) San Mateo, California, February 15, 2001 - Valentine's Day visitors
exchanging cards with their sweethearts found it difficult to access popular
greeting card sites, repeating the same limited access that occurred last
year according to measurements taken by Keynote (Nasdaq: KEYN), the Internet
Performance Authority. Keynote also measured order fulfillment, with 93
percent of all chocolate and flower orders placed by Keynote delivered by
Valentine's Day. Chocoholic.com and 1800flowers.com each turned in a 75
percent fulfillment success rate by missing a delivery to a rural address.
The availability of popular greeting-card sites on February 14 ranged from
an average 38.4 percent for the day on egreetings.com for recipients trying
to view their cards, (compared to 64.1 percent last year), to 94.9 percent
on americangreetings.com (compared to 43.4 percent last year). The
performance of some popular chocolate, flower and fine gift sites degraded
during the week preceding the holiday as visitors placed their orders.
Ice.com averaged 14.16 seconds for the eight days from February 6 to 13,
Proflowers.com averaged 30.18 seconds (its slowest day was February 7,
averaging 48.09 seconds), Tiffany.com averaged 12.10 seconds, and Sees.com
averaged 9.22 seconds during this time period.
Some sites have performed noticeably well through the Valentine's Day
onslaught, including Victoriassecret.com (averaging 1.19 seconds with 99.4
percent availability), FTD.com (1.68 second average with 99.9 percent
availability), and 1800flowers.com (averaging 2.01 seconds with 99.4 percent
availability).
Performance results were mixed compared to last year. Proflowers.com
averaged 7.45 seconds last year in the week prior to the holiday; Sees.com
averaged 1.95 seconds last year; Chocoholic.com averaged 16.55 seconds last
year, compared to 2.94 seconds this year.
February 13 was the slowest day leading up to Valentine's Day, with an
average for all sites of 10.30 seconds, followed by February 7, at 8.01
seconds.
Keynote measured the performance and availability of 17 major chocolate,
flower, fine gift and greeting-card web sites from February 6 through
Valentine's Day, and also measured the ability of the chocolate and flower
sites to deliver online orders by February 14. Keynote's measurements were
taken every 15 minutes between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Pacific time from 66
Internet access points in 25 metropolitan areas in the United States, a
subset of Keynote's global network of measurement computers in over 140
locations around the world, resulting in over 71,000 daily measurements for
these sites. To measure fulfillment, Keynote ordered four items from each of
four top chocolate and four top flower web sites on Wednesday, February 7
following the recommendations of each site for delivery in time for
Valentine's Day, sent to recipients on both the East and West Coasts.
"The greeting card sites could not serve their web pages effectively on
February 14 when everyone wanted to receive their Valentine's Day cards ON
that day," said Daniel Todd, Chief Technologist for Public Services at
Keynote. "Valentine's Day is a stricter test of performance and fulfillment
than were the Christmas holidays because the target delivery date for an
electronic greeting card is only a single day."
The following table lists the web sites measured, their average performance
and availability in the week before Valentine's Day compared to February 14,
and the results of Keynote's fulfillment measurements of chocolate and
flower sites. 75 percent fulfillment indicates three out of four on-time
deliveries. Greeting card sites are measured both for access to the home
page and for recipient's access to the card received ('pick-up'). A
comparison to last year's performance on February 14 is provided for the
greeting card sites.
