UK Smokers Encouraged to Quit with New Campaign
(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 06, 2000 ) 'Countdown to Quitting', a national campaign to encourage more smokers to start preparing now in order to successfully stop smoking in 2001, is being launched today in London.
Giving up smoking is one of the most popular New Year's resolutions. Over two million smokers in Britain will try to quit smoking this New Year, according to a new survey by the national charity QUIT(r), also released today. Yet addiction to nicotine makes this a very difficult task and research shows that only 3% of smokers who attempt to quit on willpower alone are likely to succeed.
Furthermore, nearly 1 in 4 smokers who have tried to quit smoking at New Year blame their lack of success on inadequate planning and preparation. Top tips from 'Countdown to Quitting' include setting a quit date and gaining support from family, friends and healthcare professionals in order to ensure success.
Most smokers do not continue to smoke out of choice, but because they are addicted to nicotine - 69% of those who failed to quit smoking at New Year in the past recognised being addicted to nicotine. To overcome their addiction, one third of those who are trying to quit this New Year are planning to seek help from their GP, compared to only 4% in the past.
A great array of smoking cessation treatments are now available and more than 25% of smokers surveyed said they planned to try one. Smoking is now an NHS priority and the government has committed £100 million to helping smokers stop. Last year 120,000 people in Britain alone died from smoking related diseases.
