This information is everyday knowledge for users of the new Read Notify web service.

Located at www.ReadNotify.com, this new service allows senders to track their email all the way to it's destination - and perhaps beyond. To activate tracking, senders merely add ".readnotify.com" onto the end of the recipients email address before clicking send in their existing mail client. Neither sender nor recipient needs to install any software, since ReadNotify already works with all popular email packages including all web-based services, on PC, Mac, unix, and most other computing platforms.

When ReadNotify-tracked email is opened, the sender receives back a read notification email which shows the date and time their message was first opened, and may include the length of time the message was read for (depending on the settings chosen when the user signed up for the service). Users of ReadNotify also get their own personal web page which lists all emails they have sent through ReadNotify, and the full tracking history - which includes the dates and times of sending and receiving, the lengths of time emails are read for, whether or not email has been published online or forwarded to other people (and sometimes who to), and plenty of other pieces of information about their emails history.

ReadNotify claim reliability and convenience as their key strengths. Return Receipts a.k.a. "Message Disposition Notifications" have been around a long time, but they are notoriously unreliable. Further, most web based mail services as well as some popular email software do not support Return Receipts at all, even if the sender requests one. ReadNotify instead uses a combination of several different techniques which brings reliable return receipt technology to everyone.

There is currently no charge for use of the ReadNotify service, although a small charge may be introduced in future.
