THE McCAW/INTEL DEAL
(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 29, 2004 ) CEDAR KNOLLS, NJ -- Intel has announced an investment in Craig McCaw's Clearwire Holdings for the purpose of promoting WiMax broadband wireless technology.
"The significance of this investment lies not in the dollar amount but in who made it and where it was invested," said Allan Tumolillo, COO of Probe Financial Associates, "and since Intel made the investment in a Craig McCaw operation, it is very significant."
"Craig McCaw has been a pioneer in wireless, through the McCaw Cellular operation, which became the core of AT&T Wireless and has now become part of Cingular, and through Nextel in which he had been a major investor early on" said Tumolillo. "Mr. McCaw has now focused on the broadband wireless opportunity and has found common ground with Intel."
Intel has made a broad and deep commitment to wireless, from its Centrino chipsets to a long-term commitment to WiMax. Wireless has become central to its vision of the future and WiMax the centerpiece of its broadband strategy. A marriage of a major IT company with a true wireless innovator like McCaw may create strong momentum for WiMax which will ripple through the entire wireless industry.
PFA's new report, "The McCaw/Intel Deal" assesses the significance of Intel's investment in Clearwire and the potential threat from WiMax broadband wireless technology to both landline and wireless operators. - # -
