(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 28, 2000 ) In today's booming economy, trying to have it all and have it now is taking a toll on our youth. Racking up consumer debt is learned early in life, but unfortunately the consequences are not. Currently, more than one in three, 18 to 29 year olds carry between $5,000 and $50,000 in consumer debt, according to a recent survey by the GE Center for Financial Learning. Of those surveyed, one in five had to move back in with parents or friends, because of debt or other financial issues. Experts stress that personal finance education early in life can help prevent poor financial choices. One high school in Steven's Point, Wisconsin, has focused on this problem, and is teaching students how to harness the power of money through a uniquely designed money management course, which draws some of its curriculum from the Internet. Nationally 40 percent of students will end their official education with high school and will face adult financial decisions right away. Teaching young adults personal money management is giving them the knowledge of how to avoid the pitfalls of debt, and skills to make them self sufficient, something they will use every day for the rest of their lives.
