Special 800th Anniversary Service at Valle Crucis Abbey
(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 23, 2001 ) Cardiff, Wales
A special service commemorating the 800th anniversary of the foundation of Valle Crucis Abbey, near Llangollen, is to be held at the Abbey this Sunday, 28 January, at 3.00pm.
The bilingual service, which will last approximately three quarters of an hour, will be taken by the Reverend Wilfred Jones and Father Joseph Stewart of Llangollen.
Valle Crucis Abbey, which is under Cadw: Welsh Historic Monument's care, was founded on January 28, 1201, by thirteen Cistercian monks who had travelled to the area from Strata Marcella Abbey near Welshpool.
The Cistercians were known for their simple, rural lifestyle, and often chose sites ‘off the beaten track’ for their abbeys. While the ruling royal family of Powys Fadog initially supported Valle Crucis, the Abbey later grew rich due to the large tracts of land it owned.
There are strong connections between Valle Crucis and a number of famous Welsh medieval poets, and several poems relating to the abbey will be read as part of the service.
A warm welcome is extended to people wishing to attend the service, which will be held in the Abbey’s Chapter House. People are advised, however, to wear warm clothing and appropriate footwear.
Ends
For further information contact Hannah Thomas, Cadw Information Officer, on 00 44 29 2082 6178, or Rhodri Ellis Owen at Cambrensis PR on 00 44 29 2025 7075.
