(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 29, 2001 ) Each year between 700 and 800 people die in boating-related accidents -- nine out of 10 victims were NOT wearing their life jackets. Statistics show that while only 27 percent of boaters wear their life jackets when on the water, more than 80 percent of fatalities result in drowning for lack of a personal flotation device. As kickoff to one of the biggest recreational weekends of the year, the National Safe Boating Council has partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard to mark North American Safe Boating Week, May 19 - 25. Designed to educate boaters that life jackets save lives, their goal is to decrease the number of boating fatalities and make water activities more enjoyable and safer. Currently there are more than 80 million boaters in the United States and as the summer season approaches those numbers are expected to increase.
