Sacagawea Beats Susan B. Anthony

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 23, 2001 ) ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (Jan. 23, 2001) — In 21 years, the champion of women’s suffrage, Susan B. Anthony, has sold only 921 million coins. By contrast, four months after its release, Sacagawea, Native American guide to the Lewis and Clark expedition, had already sold more than 600 million golden dollar coins, with an additional six million new Sacagawea coins being minted each day.

A case study released by ProSavvy, an online procurement solution that empowers enterprises to more efficiently and effectively manage professional service providers (PSPs), reveals how the strategic sales and marketing efforts of two ProSavvy-affiliated PSPs helped Sacagawea to beat Susan B. Anthony in acceptance, distribution and use of commemorative coins.

According to the study, the U.S. Mint used ProSavvy’s solution to specify its needs and project expectations. As the U.S. Mint’s Greg Weinman explained, “Within 48 hours, ProSavvy presented a list of its affiliated professional service providers that contained concise and descriptive information on each firm’s capabilities and experience.”

The Mint chose Oxford Associates, a sales and marketing consulting firm, to research the coin’s potential uses and Double Eagle Market Development Company to develop and conduct the business and marketing for the new coin.

The study recounts how Oxford Associated identified the coin’s potential users and established a plan for extolling the benefits of the coin to companies. Using Oxford Associates' research as a guideline, Double Eagle launched an aggressive campaign to promote the coin to transit authorities, toll plazas, car washes, laundries, fast-food chains and retailers.

“The coin has been considerably more successful than anticipated,” said Norm Broadhurst, president of Double Eagle. “In the first four months, the Mint shipped four times as many coins as they’d planned on shipping over the entire year.”

The case study was released by ProSavvy as part of the company’s evaluation of the top professional service projects of 2000.
