Rheumatoid Arthritis Drug Breakthrough Earns Inventor of the Year Award
Intellectual Property Owners Association Singles Out Drug Used to Relieve Crippling Joint Inflammation
(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 06, 2001 ) The Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO) is honoring three scientists as "inventors of the year" for their work on a genetically engineered drug that slows the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. In the United States alone, there are approximately 2.5 million Americans living with this disease.
Craig A. Smith, Raymond G. Goodwin, and M. Patricia Beckmann of Immunex Corp. have been selected to receive the 28th Annual Inventor of the Year Award for their 10 years of work that culminated in the invention of a new protein for the body that plays an important role in immune function and inflammation. The protein, called etanercept (brand name ENBREL®), inhibits the inflammatory process and progressive joint destruction that can lead to disability in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
IPO's award is the oldest and best-known award given to current American inventors and presents a cash award to its annual winners. To be eligible, an invention must have been patented or first marketed in the past four years. Past winners include Paul Macready for the "Gossamer Condor," a human-powered flying device; Robert Jarvik for the Jarvik Seven Artificial Heart; James L. Fergason for liquid crystal displays; Gordon Gould for optically-pumped lasers; and Amar G. Bose for the Bose speaker, a folded waveguide loudspeaker system.
