Prose and Roses
Medieval Garden Talks at Tretower Court
(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 05, 2001 ) Cardiff, South Wales, UK
With its rose arbour and fountain, a ‘flowery mede’ full of wild flowers, and flower beds packed with herbs and plants, the recreated medieval pleasure garden at Tretower Court, near Brecon, is the unique setting for a series of talks this summer by gardener and poet, Francesca Kay.
Every Friday afternoon, from June 8thst - August 3rd, at 2.15pm, Francesca will bring medieval gardening and folklore to life, with a host of tips for green-fingered enthusiasts, and a taste of poetry and prose from the Middle Ages.
The informal talks, which form part of Cadw: Welsh Historic Monument’s 2001 events programme, coincide with the best time to view the garden, during June, the height of the traditional medieval summer.
Set in open country against the backdrop of the Brecon Beacons mountain range, Tretower Castle dates back to Norman times. By the early fifteenth-century, however the castle had been partially abandoned in favour of a new building, later transformed by the Vaughan family into the substantial stone built manor house that survives to this day.
The gracious style of living enjoyed by the favoured few in the Middle Ages is evoked within the carefully restored manor house and garden, designed purely for its beauty and aesthetics. Such gardens were the sole preserve of the wealthy in medieval times and were highly prized.
Francesca Kay says, “I like gardening and medieval history, and Tretower is one of the few places where one can combine both these interests. The garden is full of historic plants, including Rosa alba, the white rose of York. I look forward to sharing my love of the site with visitors.”
Francesca Kay Medieval Garden Talks, 2.15pm June 8,15,22,29, July 6,13,20,27 and August 3. Normal admission charges apply.
Ends
