(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 25, 2001 ) Monica Lozano, the president and chief operating officer of the country's leading Spanish-language daily newspaper -- La Opinión has joined the board of directors of UnionBanCal Corporation and its major subsidiary, Union Bank of California, N.A. She was elected to the 17-member board last December; the appointment became effective at the January 24 board meeting in San Francisco. Lozano, 44, directs the day-to-day business operations of La Opinión, including managing the editorial, operations, circulation, marketing and advertising departments. Under her leadership, La Opinión has received numerous awards over the years, including the 1997 Community Service Award from the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) for the informational campaign, Voto 96, and the 1998 IAPA award for reporting on hemispheric issues. The paper also has been recognized by organizations such as the State Bar of California, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Southern California Association of Governments for reporting on social, civic and political issues. In 1999, Lozano spearheaded the launch of several new initiatives for La Opinión, including the opening of La Opinión Business Centers located in Gigante supermarkets, the introduction of home delivery service, and the development of a pilot program with the U.S. Small Business Administration to further develop Hispanic-owned small businesses. In addition, La Opinión premiered a new public affairs television program in conjunction with the Spanish language television network Univision, called Voz y Voto (Voice and Vote). In January 1999, California Governor Gray Davis appointed Lozano to the California State Board of Education. Later that year she and four other business leaders accompanied Gov. Davis on an official state visit to Mexico City to meet with then president, Dr. Ernesto Zedillo.Lozano joins one of the most diverse boards in the banking industry with four minorities and two women among its outside directors.
