(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 06, 2002 ) On September 6, at a press conference at 10 a.m. PST, the Lawrence Gallery in Portland, Oregon will unveil the first reproductions of the Madonna della Pieta, the bust of the Virgin Mary from Michelangelo's Pieta. Over five hundred years after the completion of the Pieta, the bust of the Virgin Mary has been produced from a master made from the Vatican's mold of the original. The Madonna della Pieta is produced under exclusive license from the Treasurers of St. Peter's Museum in the Vatican.

At age 23, Michelangelo presented what would come to be regarded as one of the world's great masterpieces of inspired art and perhaps the most beautiful sculptures ever created. The Pieta stands as an icon, bringing inspiration to the millions who visit St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican every year. Of all of Michelangelo's sculptures, the Pieta was the only one he ever signed as he considered it to be the consummate expression of his talent. The mold was created in the 1970's under the supervision of the Vatican's own artisans and the reproduction is identical to the original. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these sculptures goes toward the maintenance and restoration of the artworks within the Treasurers of St. Peter's Museum Collection.
