Premature Births Soar in U.S., Now Number One Pregnancy Problem
March of Dimes Launches Campaign to Raise Public Awareness, Reduce Rates of Preterm Birth and Increase Research to Find Cause
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 03, 2003 ) Nearly one in eight babies will be born prematurely this year, the number one problem in obstetrics today. That is why the March of Dimes is kicking off a new national campaign aimed at decreasing premature births by 15 percent.
The $75 million, five-year campaign was launched at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. on January 30. It is aimed at increasing awareness and educating women to the signs and symptoms of preterm labor. The campaign will also raise new funds to support research into the causes and treatment of prematurity.
The annual rate of babies born prematurely has risen 27 percent since 1981. There are 1,305 premature babies born in the U.S. every day. The National Center for Health Statistics says prematurity is the leading cause of neonatal death, accounting for 23 percent of deaths in the first month of life. Many of the babies who survive may suffer lifelong consequences, from cerebral palsy and mental retardation to blindness. Almost half of all premature births have no known cause.
