Predicting the Cost of College
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 06, 2001 ) Saving for college is not as easy as it sounds. What may be enough today, certainly won't be tomorrow. So how do you predict what higher education will cost?
There's no question about it. Going to college is expensive. Since 1980, the cost of a college education has risen more than twice as fast as the consumer price index. But most people who send their children to college have been preparing for it for years.
However it's done, investments, savings or gifts, getting money together for college takes plenty of planning, especially with unexpected expenses that may catch you by surprise. Alone, there is room and board to think about, which can take up as much as 50 percent of the total cost of going to college.
As much as it may cost, a college degree is more important today than ever before. Most people want to save for two things: retirement and their children's education. It's important to start saving for college early on, since the inflation for the cost of a college education has been running typically two - three percent higher than that of wage inflation.
