OpenHSF Initiative Releases Free Read/Write SDK

Emerging visualization standard boosted by free import/export toolkit

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 23, 2003 ) Oakland, CA. and Westminster, CO —— The OpenHSF Initiative made available today a free version of the HOOPS Stream Toolkit (HOOPS/Stream), the import/export SDK for the OpenHSF format. A source-code level version of the toolkit may be freely downloaded from www.openhsf.org, incorporated into applications and redistributed completely free of charge. A pre-compiled, fully supported version of HOOPS/Stream remains available for commercial licensing.

HOOPS/Stream enables application developers to more quickly and easily implement full and accurate import and/or export of the highly compressed OpenHSF visualization format. By offering the HOOPS/Stream software without charge, TSA and Spatial are taking yet another step toward the ultimate goal of the OpenHSF initiative—to create an open standard for visualization.

“With support from such a significant portion of the leading engineering software vendors, OpenHSF is quickly emerging as a commercial-grade standard. The extensive and expanding support indicates the groundswell of demand for a truly open approach to visual interoperability. Publishing the specification for the HSF format was step one in this open effort. Working with members on the first set of public OpenHSF extensions was step two. Making this source-code level version of the read/write SDK available for free is the next logical step toward making OpenHSF a ubiquitous standard for 3D engineering visualization,” said Ron Fritz, Managing Partner of TSA and Acting Executive Director for the OpenHSF Initiative.

"Visual interoperability is emerging as the major technology approach to more closely unite product developers and worldwide supply chain partners in their efforts to design and manufacture new products. The OpenHSF Initiative's announcement of a free import/export SDK should entice a wide range of new application integrations to join the already impressive list of software vendors and industrial partners sharing product data through the OpenHSF medium. Such open communication has already demonstrated a proven track record to improve product development efficiency, product innovation, and reduced time to market," added Ken Versprille, Ph.D., Research Director, D.H. Brown Associates, Inc.

About the HSF Format
The .HSF file format contains highly-compressed, lightweight visualization information that can be used to move 2D and 3D data more fluidly through an enterprise. This fluent exchange of model data helps organization communicate more effectively and efficiently, both internally and externally, and greatly aids in the repurposing of rich CAD models for lightweight uses such as view/mark-up, training, assembly/maintenance, documentation, design-in-context and e-commerce. HSF provides a rich scene-graph definition for engineering-centric data as well as sophisticated compression for the rapid transmission of files over networks. OpenHSF extensions exist for animation/behaviors and representing assembly structure, with more XML extensions currently being designed and ratified by the growing OpenHSF membership.

About the OpenHSF Initiative

The OpenHSF Initiative is an industry-wide effort to establish a common, open and robust format for sharing visualization data between users of disparate engineering applications. Members include leading software vendors such as Dassault Systemes, PTC, MSC.Software, SolidWorks, ANSYS, Alias, CADKEY, Hitachi Zosen, INCAT, Rand Worldwide, Actify, IronCAD, Informative Graphics, ITI and Proficiency. Members also hail from major organizations using engineering software including Boeing, Ford Motor Company, DaimlerChrysler and Tenneco Automotive.
