One-of-a-Kind Piano Will be Sold at Auction February 18

It was made in Vienna, Austria and it’s certainly one of the most ornate and exquisite cases I’ve ever seen

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 16, 2006 ) Memphis, Tenn. -- A rare, antique piano, made in 1881, by Austrian piano makers Frederic Ehrbar, Hof & Krammer, will be sold from the Roebuck Auctions Center at 4293 Park Ave. on Saturday, Feb. 18, in an auction beginning at 10:07 a.m. The grand piano is contained in a Walnut art case with inlaid brass Greek key design and is believed to be the only one of its kind in existence.

“It’s certainly a very unique piano. So far as we know it’s one-of-a-kind. It was made in Vienna, Austria and it’s certainly one of the most ornate and exquisite cases I’ve ever seen,” said Rick Jeffries, executive vice president and keyboard manager of Amro Music Stores, Inc.

Harry Mobley, owner of Mobley, Inc., operates an Internet sale site called Grand Grands, which specializes in pianos. There’s no question this is a rare find, Mobley said.

“We can’t document how many they made of it. It’s the only piano like that we’ve ever heard of, or that anyone we know has every heard of. That company no longer exists. The archives don’t go back that far, so there’s no way to check. But it was all handmade, so the number must have been very limited,” said Harry Mobley, who handles the Internet, international sales, and acquisitions for Amro.

The piano is one of more than 60 items that will be sold Saturday. All pieces included in the sale were used most recently to furnish the historic Galloway Mansion located in the Evergreen Historic District. Other items up for auction include a variety of French style Louis XV and Louis VXI antique furniture, artwork, tapestries and rugs.

Items will be available for inspection on Friday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, prior to the auction from 8 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

“This is one auction antique collectors are not going to want to miss. I know we’re going to have a big crowd, so come early to get a good seat,” said John Roebuck, president of Roebuck Auctions.
