New eMarketer Report Reveals mCommerce Projections Can't Offer Accurate Picture for Future Usage

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 17, 2001 ) The North American Wireless Report, released August 16 by eMarketer (www.emarketer.com), reveals that disparity prevails in current US m-commerce revenue projections from a variety of research firms. Forecasts for the year 2004 range from between $700 million and $27 billion in 2004. The North American Wireless Report cites data from more than 100 research organizations and consultancies, offering numerous examples of discrepancies between their projections. "Until a technological standard is defined for m-commerce is adopted, you will continue to see massive differences between the projections from different firms," states eMarketer analyst Ben Macklin. "Currently, it's difficult enough to forecast the next 6 months, let alone to the year 2004." eMarketer conservatively forecasts that by 2004 approximately 30 million m-commerce users, spending $50 each, will purchase $1.5 billion dollars worth of goods, services and applications on mobile devices. According to the report, the North American wireless market is at a crossroads. m-Commerce will either 'kick-on' over the next 18 months with carriers driving new wireless data and internet services, or it will fall further behind Europe and Asia and wallow in a mire of competing technological platforms. Report Highlights Mobile Phone Penetration The ITU reports at the end of 2000, the US (40%) and Canada (23%) lagged significantly behind other developed countries in terms of mobile phone penetration. In comparison, Taiwan, Austria and Italy had penetration rates approaching 80 percent. Mobile Phone Subscriber Forecasts in the USeMarketer forecasts that mobile phone subscribers will surpass 150 million by 2004. The US wireless market will then be the second largest in the world behind China. Mobile Internet UsersComparative estimates reveal there will be between 60 and 83 million mobile internet users in the US by 2005. PDAsThe Yankee Group reports there will be an installed base of 26.6 million PDAs in the US by 2003. Mobile AdvertisingResearchers continue to have difficulty projecting m-advertising spending. Estimates range from less than $1billion to nearly $7billion by 2005. TelematicsATX Technologies forecasts that the telematics (in-car wireless solutions) sector will be worth in excess of $1.4 billion by 2003. Wireless in the Enterprise Sector International Data Corp. (IDC) reported that the US Wireless Application Service Provider (WASP) sector will grow to more than $730 million by 2004. IDC also forecasts the wireless middleware sector will rise to $9.7 billion in the same year. The North American Wireless Report provides key statistics and information in 150 pages and contains 130 charts and graphs.------------------------ Produced for eMarketerCONTACT: Gary Galatiggalati@emarketer.com212-763-6041 (direct) 917-417-2229 (24 hr. cell)------------------------
