New Survey Reflects the American Consumers Increased Concern Over the Safety of the Nation's Food Supply
(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 14, 2002 ) Every day we are bombarded by news about food safety, ranging from mad cow disease to fears of terrorist attacks on the nation's food supply. Homeland Security Advisor Tom Ridge says securing the nation's food supply from sabotage is a top priority. In his next budget, President Bush has requested an additional $131-million to ensure bio-security along with tougher food protection standards. Are we tuning in or out to this news? How worried are we about the groceries we buy? A new national study, for the California Olive Industry, proves there is heightened concerned for food safety. Many Americans are taking it very personally by drawing a perimeter around their own kitchens.
The research found 38 percent have increased concerns about food safety due to biological terrorism. 34 percent have heightened awareness about food safety due to environmental issues. The California Olive Industry represents one of the oldest industries in the state and has some of the toughest standards including three government inspections. Industry representatives say the survey shows that Americans want that level of safety with everything they buy in the grocery store.
