New Mesothelioma Treatments
Experimental mesothelioma treatments are now having limited success battling mesothelioma.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 25, 2004 ) Woodland Hills, CA—Mesothelioma Advisor ( http://www.mesothelioma-advisor.org ) has released a report on new mesothelioma treatments. The article was written by Eric N. Scholnick, Attorney at Law.
In the past, a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma, a form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure, was equivalent to a death sentence. Mesothelioma, which attacks the chest wall lining (also known as the pleura) or the stomach lining (also known as the peritoneum), is an extremely fast-acting cancer, and has proven resistant to treatment. The clinical course of this disease is horrible. The tumor grows uncontrollably, and can literally crush the victim's vital organs, causing death. However, some hospitals have recently begun mesothelioma treatment programs which offer a glimmer of hope to mesothelioma victims. While it cannot be said that mesothelioma can ever be considered to be in remission, the lives of its victims may be extended, sometimes significantly so.
Traditional forms of cancer therapy have proven unsuccessful in the treatment of mesothelioma. Some hospitals have attempted aggressive surgery, only to find that the tumor grew back even faster than before the surgery. Traditional forms of chemotherapy, applied intravenously, have not been successful in slowing the growth of mesothelioma tumors. As a result, many mesothelioma victims received agonizing, yet unsuccessful, treatments, and suffered miserably prior to death.
Some current experimental treatments are now offering some limited success in dealing with this deadly cancer. Aggressive chemotherapy, applied directly to the tumor site, rather than intravenously, followed by surgery, more chemotherapy, then radiation, has extended the lives of some mesothelioma victims, in some cases more than 5 years after the original diagnosis. The best record of success has been observed at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, in New York City. Our law firm has represented two individuals who were diagnosed with mesothelioma, received treatment at Columbia Presbyterian, and are still alive today, one individual over 5 years post-diagnosis. Now, other hospitals, observing the success achieved by Columbia Presbyterian, have begun similar clinical trial programs of their own, again with some limited success in extending lives of patients.
Because the only known cause of malignant mesothelioma is asbestos exposure, victims of this disease may be eligible to receive substantial compensation. Our law firm, Lewis & Scholnick, specializes in asbestos cancer cases, and has achieved excellent results for our clients, including recent settlements of $5,300,000.00, $4,200,000.00, $3,400,000.00, and $2,200,000.00. There are two reasons for a mesothelioma victim to pursue compensation:
1.) If a mesothelioma victim initiates a claim quickly after diagnosis, settlement funds may be obtained to assist the victim in seeking medical treatment. Therefore, it is important that persons diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma promptly seek legal assistance.
2.) Settlement funds are also important to allow the victim the peace of mind of knowing that his wife and family will be taken care of in the event the disease proves fatal.
The companies which manufactured the asbestos-containing products knew since the 1920s that asbestos exposure was hazardous, and potentially deadly. If you or someone you know is diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should not feel that filing a claim for compensation is somehow "picking on" the asbestos companies. They knew their products were deadly, and should pay for the disease their products have caused.
