(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 07, 2002 ) California Micro Devices (Nasdaq: CAMD), has announced it has expanded its Power Wise RegulatorTM family of power management products with a new 1.5A, ultra-low dropout dual mode CMOS regulator. The CM3003 provides a fully adjustable output voltage from 1.2V to 2.5V, and includes an enable pin to allow for very low power consumption in standby mode. The adjustable voltage allows manufacturers to set the regulated output voltage to meet the power requirements of a wide variety of chipsets for PCs, notebooks, network interface cards, graphics cards and set top boxes where a high current capability is required.

"Next-generation graphics, networking and PC chipsets often require high levels of current to be supplied at voltage levels much lower than the standard 5V and 3.3V supplies that are available in a typical PC or PCI card," said Joe Salvador, director of marketing for computer products for California Micro Devices. "The adjustable output voltage of the CM3003 allows it to work with chipsets requiring regulated output voltages as low as 1.2V. In addition, the very low quiescent current and shutdown mode helps extend battery life when used in portable applications."

Superior Low Dropout Performance

Using innovative technology developed by California Micro Devices, including an on-chip charge pump, the CM3003 regulator provides very low dropout voltage and low quiescent current while still keeping a relatively small die size. This enables superior performance in a cost-effective solution. Features include:

low quiescent current - 350 microAmps at 1.5A load
foldback current overload protection
short circuit protection
high temperature thermal shutdown protection
reverse voltage protection
Adjustable Output

The CM3003 family can produce a fixed output voltage of 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V or 2.5V, or an adjustable output by using external resistors. The CM3003 family operates from a 2.2V to 3.6V input supply. When the adjust pin is connected to an external resistor network, the device automatically operates as an adjustable regulator.

Price and Availability

All versions of the CM3003 (CM3003-25, CM3003-18, CM3003-15) are currently sampling with production scheduled for later this quarter. Pricing is $0.67 at 10KU quantities. The CM3003 is available in a thermally enhanced, fused lead-frame SOIC-8 package, and is compatible with industry-standard "1565" pinout.
