National SAT Scores Up in 2001
(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 29, 2001 ) There's good news for education in America! Nationally, SAT scores are up, at the highest level in a decade -- 1.27 million high school seniors took the test, which is nearly equal to the number of freshmen entering four-year colleges this fall.
This year's national Verbal score average is the highest in more than a decade, up one point from last year at 506. The average Math SAT score remained the same as last year at 514, the highest score in more than 30 years.
The diversity of SAT takers has increased over the last 10 years. More than one-third of the group was part of a racial or ethnic minority group, and over a third will be the first in their family to go to college. Fifty-four percent were women.
More than 80 percent of four-year colleges and universities use SAT scores as part of the admissions process. The rate rises to 88 percent for institutions without open admissions policies.
