Every year, lack of adequate funding compromises the parks' ability to support visitor services, education programs, facilities upkeep, and wildlife management issues. This problem stems in part from the public's perception that our National Parks are well protected and in good shape, when in fact the parks are facing severe challenges. The Bush Promise In his only environmental campaign statement, George W. Bush promised to eliminate the National Park Service's $4.9-billion maintenance and resource- protection backlog. He also promised to increase funding for scientific research by $20 million annually. For the sake of the parks, let's hold him to that promise.
