NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL NURSES ANNOUNCES MAJOR PARTNERSHIP WITH SCHERING/KEY AT NASN'S 33RD ANNUAL CONFERENCE

School Nurses from Across the Country Are Honored for Innovative Programs

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 29, 2001 ) Phoenix, Ariz. – The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) has named Schering/KEY™ as its primary education partner in pediatric asthma and allergy education during a reception here on June 28 at the NASN’s 33rd Annual Conference.

NASN President Jane Tustin cited the pharmaceutical giant’s ongoing commitment to supporting children’s health initiatives through programs such as its SchoolAsthmaAllergy.com Web site, which promotes child asthma and allergy awareness, as well as enrollment of uninsured children in government-sponsored insurance programs.

School nurses are on the frontline in treating students with asthma and allergies and are often the primary source of care for children whose families lack health insurance coverage.

More than 1,400 school nurses from across the country attended the event. During the reception, Schering/KEY awarded a $60,000 grant to the NASN Endowment Fund. Fifty-thousand dollars of the funding will be allocated for asthma and allergy education, and $10,000 will be used for sun care education.

“This donation marks a commitment and long-term partnership between NASN and Schering/KEY to promote the health of students through the leadership of school nurses,” said Tustin. “It also represents the recognition of a major health promoting company, that school nurses are key to linking students and families to medical resources and to facilitating the academic success of students through the coordination of campus, staff and programs.”

Tustin noted that Schering/KEY will continue to provide NASN members with a quarterly asthma and allergy awareness newsletter that is distributed to 12,000 school nurses and sponsor workshops where school nurses can earn credits toward a master’s degree. In addition, NASN will provide a direct link to SchoolAsthmaAllergy.com on its Web site, www.nasn.com.

“NASN is a leader in developing programs that address the health challenges of schools in our local communities,” said Richard Zahn, president of Schering-Laboratories. “Through our collaboration with NASN, Schering/KEY is committed to supporting school nurses in addressing the challenges brought on by the increase in pediatric asthma and allergies.”

Schering/KEY Honors the Achievements of School Nurses
Schering/KEY also presented seven school nurses from across the country with a total of $3,500 in grants for their innovative efforts to address the needs of children in their schools with asthma and allergies. Lenore Harris of DeAnza Middle School in Ventura, Calif., was selected as the winner of Schering/KEY’s School Nurse Asthma and Allergy Leadership Award and received a new computer for her school and a $1,000 grant for the purchase of asthma and allergy education materials.

Six nurses were selected as runners-up for the Leadership Award, and each received a $500 grant to support asthma and allergy education in their schools. They are Christine Amstutz of William S. Hart UHSD, Santa Clarita, Calif; Marie Hoemke, San Francisco Unified School District; Sandra Larson, Community Consolidated School District 64, Park Ridge, Ill.; Yolanda Lasmarias and Karen Maiorca, Los Angeles Unified School District Nursing Services; and Barbara Thumlert, Spruce Primary, Seattle.
