Matisse/Picasso -- Hottest Ticket in Town
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 17, 2003 ) Two of the most important painters in recent history are together again for what's being called the most valuable collection of art ever exhibited.
The works of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso are being displayed in a stunning exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. It's being billed as the art event of the year.
There are 132 works in the exhibit, including some of the best known paintings in the world, sculptures and experimental art. The museum is pairing similar works from each artist side by side -- to show how Matisse and Picasso tried to outdo each other and, in effect, brought out their best.
Matisse and Picasso revolutionized the art world and spawned such movements as Fauvism and Cubism. They began their art careers as friendly rivals nearly a century ago and became close friends as the years went by. MoMA is the only U.S. museum presenting Matisse/Picasso, which had tremendous success in London and Paris. The MoMA exhibition runs through May 19th.
