Life Skills Centers Offer Alternative to Quitting High School

download

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 16, 2003 ) The latest numbers show that over 3.8 million young adults are not enrolled in school. But with the recent Supreme Court ruling in favor of school vouchers and "school choice" being one of today's hottest political issues, students and parents are discovering an alternative to traditional public schools.

Instead of waiting until September, kids who have failed out of school - or dropped out for other reasons - can enroll in one of these alternative schools right away. One such school is the tuition-free Life Skills Center in Elyria, Ohio. Publicly funded, Life Skills Centers focus on giving maximum personal attention, with classes no larger than 11 at a time. Computer-based teaching is also used, allowing everyone to work at their own pace. It's a technique designed for students who would otherwise get frustrated and confused in a larger class.

The Centers work to help students balance school with life. The average day is just four hours long, allowing students to work a full time job if needed. In fact, the program requires that students keep a regular job for at least 90 days in order to graduate. With so many teens working to help support their families, the requirement is not so much a lesson as a harsh reality. But thanks to the Life Skills Centers, they no longer have to sacrifice their educations in order to make a living.

And the reward is worth it. Instead of a GED, students receive a full high school diploma upon graduation.

There are currently 14 Life Skills Center charter schools in the United States serving over 3,700 students. They are located in Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Elyria, Middletown, Springfield, Toledo, Warren and Youngstown, Ohio as well as in Phoenix, Arizona. They plan to open several more schools in the next year.
