L-3 Communications' Battlefield Sensor System Wins 2002 Grace Hopper Government Technology Leadership Award For Homeland Security

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 14, 2003 ) L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its Improved Remotely Monitored Battlefield Sensor System (IREMBASS) has been awarded Government Executive Magazine's 2002 Grace Hopper Government Technology Leadership Award in the category of "Contributing to Advances in Homeland Security and the War on Terrorism." L-3 Communications has been the sole-source supplier of the U.S. Army's IREMBASS program since its inception in the late 1970s. IREMBASS has been deployed at nuclear power facilities in support of the New Jersey Army National Guard homeland security mission.

IREMBASS was selected over 140 other submissions in the area of Homeland Security and the War on Terrorism. Now in its 11th year, the Government Technology Leadership Awards program recognizes federal projects and personnel making exceptional contributions to mission accomplishment, cost effectiveness and public service. The award is named for Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, a 43-year Navy veteran committed to technological innovation.

"We are honored that our IREMBASS system has been recognized for its contribution to homeland security," said Greg Roberts, president of L-3 Communication Systems - East. "The system has consistently received accolades from our military users and we are now gratified to see that its effectiveness in domestic security applications has also been acknowledged."

IREMBASS provides perimeter security in remote access areas and early warning of potential terrorist attacks. The system has been deployed at sensitive installations worldwide including protection of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and coalition forces in Bosnia and Kosovo. By integrating sensor detection information with geographic information systems, and networking the data with other intelligence assets, users receive a comprehensive security picture. For more than two decades military and various civilian agencies have used IREMBASS to enhance knowledge-gathering capabilities, provide force protection, and implement security measures.

"The IREMBASS development team takes pride in having been recognized with this award," said Joe Mollo, product spokesman for L-3 Communications. "We have worked very closely with the U.S. Army to improve the design of the REMBASS product family to meet the challenges of the military intelligence community. Additionally, REMBASS is ideally suited for the Army's force protection mission, as well as application to the security of our nation's critical domestic infrastructure."

The Army National Guard has effectively used IREMBASS for intrusion detection and notification in variety of applications including commercial airfield monitoring, border patrol, drug enforcement applications, and most recently, nuclear power plant protection. IREMBASS is an earlier version of the most current REMBASS, called REMBASS-II. While IREMBASS is still in service by the U.S. Army and several international militaries, the newest version, REMBASS-II, has been delivered to the U.S. Army's Stryker Brigade Combat Teams, and has been ordered by the U.S. Army's Physical Security Forces and the U.S. Marine Corps. REMBASS-II is a lighter, smaller, more capable, and more affordable version of IREMBASS, yet retains, and enhances, the exceptional performance of IREMBASS.
