Kyocera Wireless Corp. Elevates Skip Speaks to Chief Executive Officer

Speaks adds CEO title to existing role as company's president

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 15, 2002 ) SAN DIEGO -- Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading manufacturer of CDMA wireless phones, today named Howard W. "Skip" Speaks its new chief executive officer. Speaks adds the title and responsibilities to his existing role as the company's president. Speaks replaces outgoing CEO Masahiro Inoue who, after leading the company since its inception in February 2000, has accepted a new assignment within Japan-based Kyocera
Corporation.

"Kyocera Wireless Corp. has come so far in just over two years – especially in light of a challenging economic climate and the difficulties that have befallen so many of our competitors - and I'm optimistic about the future of the company," said Speaks. "A great deal of credit goes to Mr. Inoue and we thank him for his excellent leadership. I'm honored by the confidence shown in me by Kyocera Corporation and our board of directors, and I look forward to continued success for Kyocera Wireless Corp. based on our highly competitive products and prudent management."

According to industry analyst firm Gartner Group/Dataquest, Kyocera Wireless Corp. had the third-largest market share of wireless phones in North America for the first quarter in 2002. A technology leader, the company was among the first manufacturers in the world to bring together wireless phones and handheld computing devices, culminating in the recent announcement of the new Kyocera 7135 smartphone. The company also was among the first to reach the consumer market with technologies including CDMA2000 1X, a third-generation wireless protocol for high-speed data transmission, and assisted GPS, a position-location technology used for compliance with the
U.S. government's E911 mandate.

"When it comes to CDMA wireless technology and innovative handsets, Kyocera Wireless is the gold standard in this industry," said Speaks. "I believe this company has achieved operational excellence and my goals now center on growing market share and building equity in the Kyocera Wireless brand."

Speaks became Kyocera Wireless Corp.'s president and chief operating officer in September 2001. He previously served as CEO of Triton Network Systems, a broadband fixed wireless equipment manufacturer that he led through a successful IPO in July
2000. Speaks is a former executive vice president and general manager of Ericsson's North American wireless division and network operators group. Speaks was responsible for sales and deployment of Ericsson's wireless communications equipment to wireless carriers throughout the United States.
