Keynote Sells New E-Commerce Transaction Benchmarks; Establishes Performance Standards for Vertical Markets: Retail, Banking, Travel & Hospitality
Landsend.com (NYSE:LE) and LLBean.com Lead Retail Benchmark With Fastest Online Transactions For the Holidays
(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 05, 2000 ) San Mateo, CALIFORNIA, -Keynote (Nasdaq: KEYN), the Internet Performance Authority(tm), today announced it would sell new e-commerce transaction benchmarks which establish, for the first time, performance standards for multi-step Web transactions in various vertical markets, starting with online retailing, banking and travel and hospitality. The Keynote Benchmark indexes can be purchased by Web site operators to ensure quality of service for their online customers, and diagnose and improve the transaction performance of their Web sites by comparing it against key competitors in their market. The Benchmarks expand Keynote's business model to include sales of vertical market performance data as well as Internet performance measurement services. The Keynote Benchmark indexes are available on a subscription basis and allow Web site operators to benchmark their transaction performance against industry-leading Web sites.
In the first two weeks' results of the Keynote Retail Industry Benchmark(tm), currently underway with the 2000 holiday e-shopping season, Landsend.com, Jcrew.com, LLBean.com and EddieBauer.com led with the best transaction times, all under 10.0 seconds, representing the time it takes for online users to search for an item of apparel. Among the 12 sites in the Benchmark, Landsend.com had the best transaction time the week of November 12, averaging 4.71 seconds, with the slowest time that week of 26.84 seconds. The week of November 19, LLBean.com had the best transaction time, averaging 4.35 seconds, with the slowest time that week at 24.90 seconds. Performance for homepage downloads the first week ranged from Nordstrom, the fastest site with an average of 0.78 seconds, to the slowest site at 4.54 seconds. The second week, Nordstrom.com and Saks.com tied at .80 seconds; with the slowest page download at 5.16 seconds. For the Retail Benchmark, Keynote measured transactions to search for an item of apparel from the time it takes to access the site through each page required to complete the search. The average number of pages per transaction is 3.4, although it varies depending on a particular site's search process.
"Transaction performance is an essential aspect of overall Web site quality of service, particularly for e-commerce sites selling products or services," said Umang Gupta, Chairman and CEO of Keynote. "Keynote's Industry Benchmarks are partly in response to the interest we've found in purchasing the results of our other indexes. As the objective Internet performance authority, Keynote is in a position to help various markets establish standards for transaction performance, much as we have for online trading with the Keynote Web Broker Trading Index(TM)"

About Keynote's Transaction Perspective Service
Keynote's Perspective(tm) Transaction service measures the performance and availability of multi-page interactive e-commerce transactions, from cable-modem, DSL and T-1 Internet connections, providing detailed measurement and analysis of each step of a transaction so that e-commerce sites can optimize and assure a consistently high quality of service for their online customers. Perspective(tm) Transaction supports the variety of techniques used in e-commerce transactions today including personalization of individual transaction streams for repeat visitors using persistent-cookie technology as well as interactive browser pop-up windows and javascript menus.
The Keynote Perspective Transaction service employs a unique browser-based recorder that is used to record and play back a transaction sequence at a desktop PC without requiring any complicated scripting language or technical expertise. The recorder captures the exact sequence of web pages, form fields, and hyperlinks that an online user navigates in performing an interactive transaction on a web site. The recorded transaction is then distributed to Keynote's measurement computers on the major Internet backbones where it is executed around the clock at the desired intervals to provide detailed performance results.
