What would you call an animal with 97% fat-free red meat, farm-raised with no growth hormones or antibiotics added to its food? How about an animal whose oils are touted by some doctors and researchers as one of the best skin healing lotions and sports trainers as an excellent pain reliever? It's called an emu, but John Johnson Jr., CEO and founder of Johnson Emu Processing Inc. in Alabama calls it a miracle. He calls it that because he believes in the products derived from the bird.

A recent University of Wisconsin-Madison study ranked emu meat high in healthy eating. The study compared the types of fatty acids in alternative red meat versus white meats, and found emu meat lower in percentage of saturated fatty acids. It also found emu meat is on par with chicken and turkey in a healthy diet. Emu meat is low in cholesterol and sodium and taste a lot like prime beef.

From the oil, the plant makes sports creams, body lotion and arthritis creams under private labels. The company recently contracted with HealthSouth Corp. for a line of the skin care products used by therapist and patients in 2000 clinics nationwide.

Clinical studies show that two major properties of emu oil are its ability to penetrate the skin and its anti-inflammatory properties. Linoleic acid is known to ease aches; oleic provides an anti-inflammatory effect.

Pure oil is naturally anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. Fatty acids in emu oil mimic those in human skin, allowing it to be absorbed easily, according to the AEA, American Emu Association.
