JAPAN’S BEST KEPT SECRET IS OUT AS LUMIFLON® ARCHITECTURAL COATING IS ADOPTED IN AMERICA

The Experience Music Project Museum in Seattle, Silicon Graphics in California, and Hartford Children’s Hospital in Connecticut get a new coat with Lumiflon from Asahi Glass

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 05, 2002 ) Charlotte, NC -- Lumiflon, the architectural coating that protects Japan’s Akashi Strait Big Bridge, the Fuji TV Headquarter Office, the NEC building, and All Nippon Airlines airplanes among others, is being adopted by American architects and fabricators across the country. Lumiflon, which serves as a backbone ingredient for exterior paint and can be dissolved into various types of coatings, was developed and commercialized in 1982 by Asahi Glass as the first solvent-soluble fluoro-polymer in the world. Since then, fluoro paints based on the Lumiflon raw material have been produced by many paint makers in Japan and other countries, and applied to over 150,000 architectural structures worldwide. Some recent US sites include: the new Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington, the Hartford Children’s Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut, the Nascar Café in Orlando, Florida, Silicon Graphics in Mountain View, California, and the “Escape” rollercoaster in Universal Studios of Orlando, Florida.
The paint fabrication industry is one of the largest users of Lumiflon. PPG manufactures a coating that is available in bright colors with a high gloss for architectural building products. "This high-performance coatings’ resin system is comprised of 100% Lumiflon fluoropolymer resin, which offers exceptional color retention and ultimate resistance to weathering," said Sharon Bird, Marketing Services Coordinator of PPG.
One of the main benefits of Lumiflon is that it extends the life of a coating by boosting its weatherability, often by as much as five years. Lumiflon’s durability prevents corrosion due to elements such as water, oxygen, and chlorine. This means that the cost of re-painting, which includes labor, paint, and potential lost business during renovation, is greatly decreased over the lifetime of the paint job. Because of its superior weatherability, Lumiflon has a more affordable lifetime cost when compared to common hydrocarbon-based coatings on the market today.
Kendall Smith, the Premier Finishes Manager at another paint fabricator, Tnemec Company said, "Tnemec constantly searches for the most advanced resins to formulate into low VOC, high solids, user friendly coatings. Since Lumiflon offered the performance our customers were looking for in the areas of color and gloss retention, we incorporated it into one of our most advanced coatings. This coating is very popular for high-profile structures that are in severe UV exposures. One example is a recent project we completed with a hotel and casino in Las Vegas, where there was a need for a coating with long-term performance that could stand up to the Nevada sun. The Lumiflon-based
coating was just what we needed and our customers were very pleased with the product."
“Lumiflon has been used all over Japan for years now,” stated Ron Quail, America’s National Sales Business Manager. “Its durability and gloss are now
developing a reputation in this country and we’re starting to get a lot of American fabricators and architects requesting it for use on buildings in the U.S.”
Asahi Glass Company Ltd. of Japan developed the Lumiflon brand and markets Lumiflon in the US through AGA Chemicals, its marketing, distribution and sales subsidiary in North America.
