Internet Hosts Reach 100 Million Worldwide
(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 08, 2001 ) Communications software and solutions provider Telcordia Technologies, Inc. today reported that the number of Internet hosts has reached 100 million and has grown by 45 percent in the past year. Internet hosts include network elements such as routers, Web servers, mail servers, workstations in universities and businesses, and ports in modem banks of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The number of hosts is considered one of the most accurate measures of the size of the Internet. The Telcordia(TM) Internet Sizer, a Web-based tool that measures and forecasts a variety of Internet statistics, produces Internet host counts. New Internet statistics under exploration at Telcordia point to the possibility of relationships among Internet growth, electronic commerce and economic changes.
Even with such a high expansion rate, Internet growth may rapidly accelerate. Wireless access to the Internet has the potential to create a new surge of Internet growth, and future applications, which may require IP addresses even for home appliances, may also spur dramatic increases in rates of growth.
The Telcordia(TM) Internet Sizer, known as NetSizer reports that there are more than 350 million Internet users worldwide, with an average of 3.4 users per host. With the high quality of service in the United States there are approximately 2.4 Internet users per host, whereas in some developing countries such as China and India, there are more than 100 Internet users per host.
NetSizer reports the top five countries with the largest number of Internet hosts are the United States, Japan, Canada, UK and Germany. The five countries with the largest number of Internet hosts per capita are the United States, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Canada. However, in contrast, the countries with the highest host growth rate during the last month are Slovakia, Uruguay, Brazil, Indonesia and Italy.
To some extent, Internet statistics may behave as a barometer of the global economy. For example, during the Asian crisis in 1997, NetSizer reported worldwide Internet host counts actually decreased for several weeks. Although the relationship between Internet hosts and economic change may only be relevant when the Internet is growing rapidly and when the economic change is severe, Internet traffic growth may turn out to be a reasonable indicator of Internet economic activity in a country and perhaps even of overall economic changes in a country. The Telcordia(TM) Digital TIDE (Telcordia Indicators for the Digital Economy) research program is exploring methods of estimating Internet traffic worldwide as well as the relationship between various measures of Internet activity to both electronic commerce and economic changes. A key advantage of using Internet statistics in measuring the digital economy is timing. Due to NetSizer's real-time capabilities, many Internet statistics are typically available several months before survey-based statistics can be reported.
