Ikea's Monster Move: New Facility and New Focus On Retailing - Leaving the Logistics to Genco Distribution System
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 22, 2002 ) GENCO DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM (GENCO) today announces a new partnership with IKEA and the opening of a new 850,000 square-foot facility based in southern California that will serve all of IKEA's western, North American distribution needs.
GENCO manages all distribution center activity including software, services and staffing, allowing IKEA to maintain focus on their primary retail business.
"These are the kind of partnerships that make the most sense for everyone involved," says Pat Wilson, senior vice president of retail services at GENCO. "By outsourcing to us, IKEA has the opportunity to tap into our expertise in the startup of new distribution centers. We will staff and manage the ongoing operations, so IKEA can keep their attentions on the business of retail."
IKEA's enormous new facility will reach approximately 1.7 million square feet at its final phase of construction. The hub will serve as the Western North American Distribution Center supplying its retail stores from San Diego, Calif. to western Canada with approximately 5,250 container shipments of IKEA furnishings and accessories annually.
"Our new distribution facility provides an innovative and efficient infrastructure for our warehousing and distribution business needs, ultimately benefiting our customers," said Keith Keller, Vice President of Distribution Services, IKEA North America. "The new facility also provides quality jobs to local residents, and we're thrilled to contribute to the region's overall economic growth."
