This is the time of year when families gather and accidents happen. There are plenty of goodies to prepare, and it's important to be careful. "Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and some basic tips that you can follow are unplugging and turning off appliances when not in use and making sure that you have fire-resistant pot holders and mitts in the oven when handling hot pots," says Kathy Menis of Underwriters Laboratories. Also, when children wander into the kitchen, pot handles should be turned inward. Because of holiday candles and electrical decorations, safety devices such as smoke alarms should be checked, evacuation plans should be discussed. A few minutes should be spent learning how to use equipment like fire extinguishers before you really need them. "Fire safety is very important during the winter months," says Menis. "Recent NFPA statistics, for example, indicate that every 82 seconds there's a home fire. That's why if consumers can just follow some very basic fire safety tips for cooking, home decorating and heating, they'll have a much happier holiday season." Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, especially with all the excitement of the holiday season.
