Hispanics and Univision Make Huge Impact on Election Night
8 out of 10 Spanish-language Viewers Turned to Univision for Election Coverage
(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 16, 2004 ) Miami, FL -- On November 2, Hispanics demonstrated their ever-increasing influence on the country's electoral and political landscape. And on that same night, 8 out of 10 Spanish-language television viewers turned to the Univision Network's "Noticiero Univision" - Hispanic America's number one news source - for comprehensive election coverage.
With nearly 3 million viewers, Univision posted tremendous advantages over Spanish-language competitor Telemundo with tune-ins of 250% more Hispanic Households, 311% more Adults 18-49 and 332% more Persons 2 in head-to-head election coverage from 9-11pm ET (Source: Nielsen Hispanic Television Index).
With as many as 9.6 million Hispanics going to the polls this year, this commanding voting block decidedly influenced the 2004 electoral outcome. Election night exit poll numbers show that as many as 44% of Hispanics supported President Bush and 53% Senator Kerry, representing a significant narrowing of the gap as compared to the 2000 Presidential election in which Bush garnered 35% of the Hispanic vote versus Vice President Gore's 62%. According to the NCLR (National Council of La Raza) and other organizations, this is clear confirmation that "Hispanics cannot be simplistically or
accurately characterized as a core constituency for either party."
Considered by millions of Spanish speaking TV viewers as the most accurate and trustworthy news source in the U.S., the award-winning "Noticiero Univision" serves the needs of Hispanics in America by providing information that is vital to the community, as well as ensuring that the Hispanic voice is heard. Earlier this year, Univision joined forces with NALEO (The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund) to mobilize the Hispanic electorate. The efforts of organizations such as Univision and NALEO have resulted in the registration of 1.5 million Hispanic voters since the 2000 presidential elections.
As Hispanics continue to increase their voting strength nationwide, Univision News pledges its continued commitment to its loyal audience. "Noticiero Univision" can been seen nightly on the Univision Network at 6:30pm ET (5:30 Central).
