Hard To Find Rail Road lanterns & memorabilia On The Auction Block

Conductor’s lanterns dated in the middle to late 1800’s

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 22, 2006 ) Wickenburg, Arizona -- Rail Road lanterns & memorabilia will be the highlight of the “Rail Road & Antiquity Auction” to be held in Wickenburg, Arizona April 29. The auction will be held in the Wickenburg Elks Lodge 2160 on Frontier Street. Over 100 Rail Road lanterns dating back into the 1800’s as well as locks and signs will be featured.

One of the most unique lanterns is a Hobo Lantern which is a glass globe oil lantern mounted on a pole used to peer into the box cars to see if any hobos were in the cars. Embossed on the globe is A & W Mfg Co Chicago, Pat Jan 27 ’80. the Adam & Westlake Company was a big supplier for rail road as well as carriage and early automobile lanterns.

Short line rail road company memorabilia from the west, especially Arizona and Nevada is very collectible. The Arizona Copper Rail Road which ran from Humbolt to Prescott is an example. This company hauled copper and gold ore for refinement. Selling on this auction is a lantern from the A.C.R.R.

There will be 2 presentation conductor’s lanterns dated in the middle to late 1800’s. Numerous other very rare & unique lanterns will be sold including two kerosene hanging chandeliers with translucent porcelain shades and crystal drops.

Navajo rugs, Apache baskets and numerous antiques will also be offered for auction. Spurs, saddles and mining memorbilia add to the western flair of the day.

Wickenburg, Arizona is a western town located 45 miles northwest of Phoenix on hyways 60/93. In the early 1900’s one of the richest gold mines in the world was the Vulture Mine located 15 miles south of Wickenburg. The community also claims the dude ranch capital of the west. The Wickenburg airport has a 5280’ blacktop runway. Complimentary pick up can be arranged.
