Hands-On Art Workshop an Antidote To Effects ofHigh-Tech World

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 11, 2000 ) HANDS-ON ART WORKSHOP AN ANTIDOTE TO EFFECTS OF HIGH-TECH WORLD

Brooklyn Art School Provides Creative Expression for Whole
Families

BROOKLYN, NY - The fourth largest city in the US, Brooklyn is a world center for finance and fashion. Life moves at an
astonishing pace here, and the educational system is geared to training children for the high-tech world in which they must cope. Schools are cutting back on field trips and arts programs, yet spending millions on the latest computer hardware and software.

That's just one of the reasons why Brooklyn-based Rivky's Arts Workshop, operating out of a state-of-the-art studio on 50th Street, is so effective.

"Art is more than the sum of a paintbrush, a hand and an easel," says founder and creator, Rivky Shimon. "It is about meaning. Art is about seeing and finding the beauty in the world around us, and in ourselves."

The opportunity to find that beauty is existing less and less in our high-tech environment, according to Rivky, and
students in her school thrive as a result. Rivky's studio has served several hundred families, mostly through word-of-mouth, since it opened its doors three years ago.

"We have art therapy planned for the future," says her husband Moshe, the studio's business manager, "but ANY art is therapy, and we already have something for everyone. It is the ideal medium for self-expression, and everyone has talent potential." Experts agree with this philosophy, and note that doing art can increase social skills and self-esteem. There is even evidence to support the notion that children who are engaged in art will do better academically and scholastically.

One youngster, Chavi Gruen, became a student when the studio opened and has been there ever since. Chavi has Down syndrome. "We tried several programs for Chavi before coming to Rivky's," says her adoptive mother Florence, "but Chavi is so happy here, and the paintings she creates are stunning. Each painting gives her a tremendous sense of accomplishment, and builds her self-confidence. She's excited, she's happy, and she practically runs to the studio
on Sundays."

As a result of developing her artistic talents, Chavi was invited to display her art for the 2000 Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) National Conferenc, held in Washington, DC.

"Just like every child or adult can be taught to read and write, and then some go on to become great writers, so too
art can be taught to everybody, and then some will go to become great artists," says Rivky. "Others will simply learn to enjoy the serenity that creating art gives you."

While she was growing up in Israel, and most of her friends were playing with dolls, owner Rivky Shimon was spending her time at the studio of one of Israel's most prominent art teachers, learning how to paint.

As an adult with a family of her own, Rivky's dream of opening an art school came true in 1996. Now in even larger quarters, the little studio she opened then just for
children keeps expanding. In addition to all the standard art classes - oils, pastels, pencil drawing, watercolor and portrait painting -- the studio now also offers gym and dance classes, woodworking and ceramics -for adults as well as children.

What began for the Shimons simply as after-school art lessons for a few neighborhood children is now catering to 500 students at once, and is being eyed by investors as a
potential franchise opportunity. A recent workshop for media personalities and educators in Florida confirmed that, using
Rivky's techniques, anyone can be taught how to draw within two hours.

The Shimons have since developed a curriculum which embodies the magic ingredients of teaching art professionally yet personally, which Rivky has modeled since the beginning. For more information about touring the facility or bringing
Rivky's Arts Workshop to local communities, call the school at (718)854-5522.
