(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 19, 2002 ) The December 2002 issue of Guitar One magazine marks the arrival of their first annual STARS & GUITARS issue--unprecedented survey of notable athletes, film and TV stars, and other celebrities who love the guitar as much as the editors and readers of Guitar One.

Guitar One has always been a leader in guitar education as well as new and refreshing ways to look at playing. For this exciting STARS & GUITARS story, however, the editorial staff turned their usual coverage approach upside down. Instead of spotlighting the skills of reputable blues, rock, and jazz players, they scoured the celebrity ranks-folks not normally known for their guitar prowess, but who nonetheless take the instrument seriously.

The result of this intensive search and screen process was a long list of well-known celebrities, from which 20 were chosen. "We were looking for celebrities and athletes who not only took guitar playing seriously but also were familiar to our readers," relates Executive Editor Bob Gulla. "Most importantly, though, was that once those two things were combined, they were relevant to the magazine."

These celebrities' relevance to Guitar One is evident in a commitment that they share with our readers to both music and the guitar. Their affinity to the instrument goes well beyond hobby, to the point at which their passion for the guitar rivals that for their careers. In fact, some have already begun careers in music, such as Denver Broncos Pro Bowler Trevor Pryce, who recently launched his own Outlook Music Company label. Says the 27 year old, "I want to run a major label someday. Hopefully I'll be known as a guy with great ears." Other stars, such as L.A. Law's Michele Green, await their chance at guitar stardom. "I'd be a full-time musician [snaps] that fast!" she says. "I wouldn't even need a moment to think about it." In doing so, she would join the likes of Jared Leto, whose band 30 Seconds to Mars has toured with Incubus and Puddle of Mudd. In addition to their public notoriety and achievements in their respective fields, all of these celebrities share a common bond: they crave validation for their musical endeavors as well.

From Yankee centerfielder Bernie Williams and comedian Andy Dick to actor Kevin Bacon, Cy Young candidate Barry Zito, and TV's Cheech Marin, these are players you want to read about-dedicated guitar players who despite their high-profile day gigs have something noteworthy to say about the instrument and what it means to them. As Williams puts it, "I've experienced big rushes in baseball games, but I really want to play my guitar in front of thousands of people and just nail it. You fantasize about stuff like that."
