Truth, Social Justice, and The American Way

American Democrats need to accept and follow "Truth, Social Justice, and The American Way" as our guiding principles as we approach the elections in 2006. These three ideas summarize what the mainstream Democratic Party stands for, and they clearly differentiate us from the supporters of the misguided and delusional Bush administration. And they will prepare us to govern well, when we are once again in power.


TRUTH

We should "Always seek to know the truth, wherever it may lead." God loves the truth and hates lies. He wants us to seek and find the truth, so that we know it: and he wants us to speak the truth, so that others may also know it.

"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall
make you free." (John 8:32 KJV - Jesus speaking)

If we make policy based on false information or delusional thinking, we quickly find ourselves in big trouble, like this idiot war in Iraq. And after someone begins to lie, he needs to continue lying in order to cover up the previous lies, so one lie in the beginning quickly leads to a whole tangled web of lies. The leaders of our country have a responsibility to find the truth and follow it, not merely to accept whatever sloppy evidence may support their pre-conceived objectives.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

We should always try to achieve "The greatest good for the greatest number, with basic rights for all." This is the perfect middle ground between the two extremes of winner-take-all unregulated Capitalism, on the one hand, and deadly, hopeless Proletarianism, on the other. This middle ground encourages and rewards the creative productivity of Capitalism, but also establishes a reasonable social and economic floor which nobody falls below. Thus total human happiness is maximized and social stability is maintained. We want nobody to be left rotting in the street.

THE AMERICAN WAY

The essence of The American Way has always been to "Treat others as you would like to be treated." This is one good expression of the famous "Golden Rule," which finds strong support in all the great religions and ethical systems of the world.
We need to recognize its supreme importance, and follow it in all our policies. In particular, this means: Do not torture; do not start wars; do not carelessly slaughter civilians; do not deliberately dissolve people's flesh with white phosphorus while pretending it is only for military illumination; do not ignore genocide; and do have a decent regard for the happiness and well-being of all people, even those whom you oppose and those who wish you harm. Always remember, "With power comes responsibility;" and also, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
