Greater Hartford Jaycees and Canon U.S.A. Award College Scholarships

Eight Area Students Receive $120,000 in Tuition Aid Made Possible by Proceeds From Canon Greater Hartford Open

 



(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 25, 2001 ) The Greater Hartford Jaycees and Canon U.S.A. Inc., a worldwide leader in imaging systems, will acknowledge the outstanding achievements of three local high school students during today's opening ceremonies of the 50th annual Canon Greater Hartford Open (Canon GHO). The Tournament officially gets underway at 9:00 a.m. today at the 1st Tee on the course at the Tournament Players Club at River Highlands. Brenda Bradley, president of the Greater Hartford Jaycees Foundation, and Kinya Uchida, president of Canon U.S.A., Inc., will present the Canon Know How Scholarship, the Canon Environmental Scholarship and the Bob Murphy Scholarship at today's event. The Jaycees Foundation also awarded five other scholarships, for a tuition aid award totaling $120,000. The scholarships are funded from money raised during last year's Canon Greater Hartford Open tournament. "It's a pleasure to recognize these outstanding young people whose scholastic merit and service to the community made them deserving of these awards," said Ms. Bradley. "Their accomplishments truly reflect the Jaycees' mission." "Canon is pleased to have been involved in this scholarship program for 17 years with the Greater Hartford Jaycees," said Mr. Uchida. "We congratulate the scholarship winners and wish them a bright future full of success." Winners of college scholarships for the school year beginning September 2001 are: Canon Know How Scholarship: Rebekah Hayes, Suffield High School, Suffield. This $20,000 scholarship is presented to the Greater Hartford area's overall top student. Hayes will be attending Sarah Lawrence College, majoring in Creative Writing, English and Education. Canon Environmental Scholarship: Terri Underhill, Rockville High School, Ellington. Underhill, a member of the Future Farmers of America, plans to attend Green Mountain College in Vermont and major in Environmental Science and Management. She will receive $5,000 a year for four years. Bob Murphy Scholarship: Mark Brooks, Wethersfield High School, Wethersfield. Brooks is a member of the Wethersfield High golf team and has served as a volunteer for the Canon GHO for four years. Brooks will receive $20,000 over four years to study Computer Science at Providence College. Sammy Davis Jr. Performing Arts Scholarship: Maureen Fewel, East Catholic High School, Marlborough. The president of her senior class, Fewel will receive $12,000 over four years to study Theater at Hofstra University on Long Island. General Sammy Davis Jr. Scholarships ($12,000 each): Quyen Truong, Conrad High School, West Hartford. A volunteer for the Science Center of Connecticut, Truong plans to attend Brown University. Catherine Grant, East Hartford High School, East Hartford. Grant will be majoring in Business. Marisa Tricarico, Southington High School, Southington, plans to attend Boston University. Fitzgerald Heslop, Weaver High School, Hartford, is a volunteer for the Capital Area Substance Abuse Council. He plans to attend Fisk University. The 2001 Canon Greater Hartford Open marks the 17th consecutive year that Canon U.S.A., Inc. has been the tournament's title sponsor. One of the largest events on the PGA TOUR, the Canon Greater Hartford Open is the sole fundraiser of the Greater Hartford Jaycees. Since Canon became the title sponsor in 1985, the Tournament has raised nearly 22 million dollars for local charities selected by the Jaycees through its Foundation. The Greater Hartford Jaycees is an organization of approximately 600 volunteers, ages 21 - 39, who promote leadership training through community service.
