New Technologies For Diesel Engines Make Them More Efficient Than Gasoline Engines - Yet Diesel Engines Are Overlooked By American Carbuyers
(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 30, 2002 ) SUGGESTED ANCHOR LEAD: Diesel Engines are in more than a third of the cars on the road in Europe. But they've yet to grab the fancy of American carbuyers - even though they're more efficient. One auto manufacturer is looking to change the American perception of diesel engines, as we hear in this report from Roberta Facinelli. (:60)
SCRIPT: Newsbreak. I'm Roberta Facinelli. Fuel economy seems to be on everyone's mind these days. The Bush Administration recently proposed an increase to the fuel economy standards for light trucks and SUVs. Groups like the Sierra Club and Union of Concerned Scientists are pushing for even higher standards. Even religious organizations are getting into the act saying gas guzzlers are contrary to Judeo-Christian teachings about protecting people and the earth. But despite all the Brou -haha, American carbuyers are still resistant to a type of engine which can achieve these goals. The diesel engine. Rich Schaum is with DaimlerChrysler, which is working on getting Americans to consider diesels.
CUT (Schaum): Today's clean diesel engines are on average 30 percent more fuel efficient while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by at least 20 percent. It's a win-win for consumers and the environment.
SCRIPT: Schaum says today's modern diesels are smoother and quieter than past engines, and are often more durable than comparable gasoline engines. I'm Roberta Facinelli.
