Land’s most recent auction involved two properties in Punta Gorda which sold absolute in July for a total of $957,000. He was assisted in this sale by fellow auctioneer Gerald Bowie of The Auction Way Company in LeGrange, Ga. In auction lingo, the term “absolute” means that there is no reserve set on the property. The highest bidder wins.

The art of auctioning has been around for centuries, and it shows no signs of slowing down. According to the National Auctioneers Association, gross sales revenue of the live auction industry grew by 6.3 percent in the first half of 2006. If the trend continues, this will result in about $255.4 billion in total revenue for the entire industry, up from $240.2 billion in 2005.

Residential real estate auctions, the hottest category of all auctions, grew by 4.4 percent in the first half of 2006, up slightly from the 4.0 percent at the same mid-year point last year. Residential real estate grew at 8.4 percent overall in 2005 and has been the topic of widespread media coverage as a growing business niche.

“The auction method provides a vehicle that gets the property sold when other methods fail to get the job done,” explained Land.

Land has been in the real estate business for 40 years and an auctioneer for 30 years, but it was only in the last five years that he combined the two and turned his traditional real estate business into a strictly real estate auction service. He specializes in real estate, farm and ranch property, and consignment machine equipment auctions.

Real estate markets fluctuate, but according to Land, “When a buyer cannot be found with a traditional listing, the auction method finds the buyer.”
