First OSDL Enterprise Achievement Award Presented to Heinz Mauelshagen
Mauelshagen Recognized for Work on the Linux Logical Volume
(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 30, 2001 ) The Open Source Development Lab (OSDL), an independent, vendor-neutral, non-profit organization dedicated to enabling Linux for enterprise and carrier-class functionality, today presented the first OSDL Enterprise Achievement Award to Heinz Mauelshagen, a German software developer. Tim Witham, OSDL lab director, awarded Mauelshagen the $25,000 prize at LinuxWorld Expo before a packed audience of Linux enthusiasts and community leaders as well as corporate Linux users. Mauelshagen was recognized for his work on the Linux Logical Volume Manager (LVM), a software solution that addresses the need of large enterprises to manage data storage. It allows data center class users to virtually re-allocate and/or resize disk storage to meet changing capacity needs. Using LVM, IT professionals can change partitions, resize disks and relocate disk space to an address of their choosing, virtually and on the fly. "The OSDL Enterprise Achievement Award was created to recognize developers for exceptional contributions to Linux for the enterprise," said Tim Witham, OSDL's lab director. "Our judges had a stellar list of nominees to choose from, and we are very pleased to present the award to Heinz. LVM fills a very important data center requirement, making Heinz's contribution extremely significant. We hope this award will encourage Heinz and other Linux developers to continue enhancing open source programs for enterprise and telecomm usage." Mauelshagen, 41, began developing LVM in 1997 in his spare time, drawing from his extensive experience in managing and developing for large, mission-critical data centers. He has spent several years working within the data centers at Deutsche Telekom/T-Nova and Deutsche Post. Mauelshagen is currently a senior engineer and team lead at Sistina Software Inc., where he is responsible for the further development of LVM. "I am truly honored to receive this award," Mauelshagen said. "LVM grew out of a personal passion to enhance the capabilities of Linux as a mainstream OS for the enterprise. The resources that OSDL provides enable serious programmers to work on the exciting and challenging projects that will make open source software an attractive option for the data center." The OSDL Enterprise Achievement Award is an ongoing program that honors talented developers whose vision and contributions are bringing data center class capabilities to open source software. The next OSDL Enterprise Achievement Award will be presented at LinuxWorld, NYC, in early 2002. Nominations will open later in the year.
