First Feline AIDS Vaccine Available
(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 12, 2002 ) The virus that causes AIDS, commonly known as HIV, isn't just a concern for humans. Researchers have identified a similar cat disease, caused by a different but related virus known as FIV, or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. This virus is a growing problem for household cats. Like HIV in humans, feline AIDS (FIV), is spreading rapidly among the cat population. Currently, up to one in 12 cats may test positive for FIV.
Feline AIDS can be a fatal disease in cats. The virus is transmitted from cat to cat primarily through bite wounds, as the virus is shed in high levels through saliva. Even though the feline virus is related to HIV, no human has ever been reported to be infected with FIV. FIV is most common among cats that are exposed to the outdoors, multiple cat households and male cats.
Help is on the way, however, with the recent approval of an FIV vaccine by the United States Department of Agriculture. The vaccine was researched for 10 years as a collaboration with researchers and scientists at the University of Florida, Gainesville, the University of California, Davis and Fort Dodge Animal Health. Developers say the vaccine has proven to be effective against the various strains of FIV found throughout the world.
The vaccine is given to cats in an initial three dose series with an annual booster.
