FertiGator Takes on Granular Chemical Manufacturers
Company Conserves Water and Solves Urban Run-off Issues
(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 17, 2002 ) REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- FertiGator Inc.TM, a maker of high tech fertilizer injection systems for residential and commercial properties wants property owners, managers and municipalities to change the way they fertilize their turf and gardens. "Granular fertilizer, herbicide and pesticide run-off is the biggest urban contributor of water pollution in the country", states Ned Lips, CEO of FertiGator, "Every day, irrigation systems are washing granulars into our storm sewers and into our water supplies."
Indeed, many water districts and environmentalists want property owners to cut back on granular fertilizer and pesticide usage to help eliminate the leaching and run-off of those chemicals into our water system. However, their solutions usually consist of mulching, composting and other organic means that are time consuming and if not managed properly, don't often give the property owner the desired results they want. At the same time they want us to also control our water usage and offer landscaping ideas such as the planting of certain grasses, watering timetables and much more to convince the customer that this is the best way to conserve a valuable resource. And while those may be very viable solutions, they take time, money, planning and discipline that many people don't have.
"Let's face it. Americans want it all", continues Lips, "When it comes to our gardens, many of us want the greenest grass, and the heartiest plants and flowers. Yet, we don't want to spend a whole lot of time to achieve that. We bag our grass because we like the way it looks. We apply granular weed killers and fertilizers to our yards because that's all we know and we install irrigation systems to keep it all watered because who has time to move the sprinkler around the yard? Conserving water? Eliminating urban run-off? Yeah, we care, but does it have to be so hard?"
FertiGator wants to just automate the entire process and make it easier for everyone. Based out of their Sales Headquarters in Redwood City,CA, staff members have furiously lobbied for environmental groups, caucuses and water wise programs to endorse the category of fertigation, a process that injects liquid organic or regular fertilizer through an existing or new irrigation system in precisely controlled, safe amounts. Fertigation has been proven to conserve water, eliminate fertilizer and most pesticide run-off...and...make the lawn and garden maintenance process easy, hassle free while providing a guarantee that a landowners yard and garden will look even better than it ever had before.
Fertigation is not a new process. In the early 1990's, many golf courses decided that they needed to address the issues of run-off of their granular applications and chose fertigation as their method. The agricultural community has used fertigation for over 30 years. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo professors have written books on the subject and teach it as course work. Until now, there hasn't been an affordable fertigation system for commercial and residential use.
The FertiGator is a unique and very affordable product that works by gradually micro-feeding precise doses (measured milliliter by milliliter) of liquid organic or regular fertilizer programmable by specific zone every time a customer waters through their irrigation system. Because it is delivered in small precisely measured doses, the plant uses up what is there and virtually nothing is lost to leaching or run-off.
Many water districts nationwide are enacting legislation to curb water usage and control storm water run-off. "The FertiGator is an extremely effective way to quantify water and fertilizer usage and give landowners a better, healthier and more beautiful landscape", Lips said, " Water districts, environmentalists and other green activists have the satisfaction of knowing exactly how much fertilizer is being dosed each day and to each specific, customizable zone...down to the milliliter."
That the Fertigator can precisely measure fertilizer usage is a huge improvement over present fertilization techniques. Present techniques of fertilization utilize granular treatments and many lawn maintained contractors have to put enough fertilizer on a residential or commercial property to last 30 – 60 days. As a result, a significant amount (reported to be as much as 70%) is lost to the water system through run-off into streams and sewer systems or leaching into the ground water. But, as convenient as granulars are to many applicators, they can be very inefficient and ineffective as well. The reason is that granular fertilizers sit on top of the ground and release only a short distance into the ground. The roots tend to grow short or even up into this highly fertilized area rendering them unable to withstand drought, pests and disease. After much of the chemical is lost due to run-off and leaching, many people tend to overwater and then add more fertilizer to keep their grass greener.
Fertigation using the FertiGator, soaks the ground with nutrient rich water creating a deep healthy root zone. As a result, roots grow thicker and deeper, and lateral roots increase the number of grass blades in the lawn. In addition, the combination of a common NPK or organic formulated fertilizer and FertiGator also improves moisture retention, stimulates beneficial microbial activity, and develops plants’ natural immune system to resist pests, disease and environmental stresses. And, because the root system is growing deeper into a moister soil and the thatch is thicker, creating more moisture retention, customers can dial down their irrigation systems as much as 30%.
Conversely, many of the chemicals found in granular and other chemical fertilizers reduce vital microbial and earthworm populations in the soil. Microbes convert nitrogen and other elements to plant-soluble molecules. When microbe populations are reduced, it becomes increasingly difficult for the plant to use these naturally occurring nutrients. More chemicals and more water are required to replace them.
And FertiGator is completely safe and was engineered that way. It has built in backflow redundancies and the dilution rate of water to fertilizer is so low that it poses absolutely no threat to children and animals. Topical applications of time released granular fertilizers that sit on top of a lawn pose a much greater risk. The micro dosing of fertigation is much like taking a one a day vitamin...never too much, but just enough to strengthen the plant because it's provided every day.
