Fashion 101: Back To Cool For Fall 2001
Where grading is on the curve and homework is always in style
(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 16, 2001 ) It's that time again. Summer is winding down. Kids are gearing up. It's a brand new school year. Among all the commotion, there is -- of course -- the back-to-school wardrobe. And in the orb of kids fashion, back-to-school shopping is certainly no textbook topic. So how can you possibly know what styles will be popular? Greendog to the rescue! With the following fashion "Cliffs Notes," greendog can help take a hearty bite out of your back-to-school shopping stress. Lesson 1 -- Syllabus. For Fall 2001, the fashions that make headlines on the designers' runways are adapted and redefined for kids in the hallways, lunchrooms and auditoriums of schools across the country. Tailored into savvy styles that are relevant to today's high-tech, high-energy kids, this year's Fall collection from greendog weaves global style statements with lifestyle-sturdy designs. "Individuality and reinvention are the buzzwords for Fall," says greendog spokesman Tom Rinehart. "It's a season of modernizing classic styles -- of mingling fabrics -- of making a personal fashion statement. It's molding a look to complement a lifestyle." Translating these design concepts into a line of children's apparel that is at once fashionable, durable, flexible and affordable, the greendog kidswear brand offers the latest back-to-school styles minus the bellyaches. Lesson 2 -- Girl talk. Knit is a hit for the girls. Sweaters are huge, and even bigger is their range. From heavy ribs to cables -- the hottest items this Fall are ones that will definitely keep you warm. And patterns including fairisles, placed chest stripes and bi-color bodies are re-interpreted with new placement, unusual and unexpected color combinations, and lurex and glitter embellishments. Denim is daring and impulsive in a dark sassy shade for dressing up and a casual medium wash for dressing down. Five-pocket flared styles (with or without embellishments) and velvet and stretch satin are the new and hot looks. Glitz, shine and plush go mainstream. Once reserved for dressy only, glitz, shine and plush are major design statements in all girls sportswear. Faux fur collars and trim animate cardigans. Plush "eyelash" yarn adds sparkle to sweaters. Faux fur-trimmed cardigans shimmer with lurex-infused ribs. Velour and velvet emerge as key plush fabrics in dresses, flare jeans, even overalls. And satin shines for Holiday in any combination of pants and dresses. Lesson 3 -- Boyish banter. It's sweater weather for the guys, too -- and the forecast is definitely cool. With stripes, argyles and cables heading this fashion front, boys' sweater styles offer diversity and character this season. And in a spectrum of colors from earth tones to bold hues, sweaters paired with jeans, khakis, cargos or even track pants achieve a school of different looks. Active is on-track for Fall. The track suit returns with a vengeance in fleece, nylon, cotton/nylon blends, and in sueded fleece for active separates. Nylon wind suits also make a big comeback. Both in suits and separates, activewear is influenced by the popularity of extreme sports like roller-blading and snow-boarding. Graphic tees, rugbies and pants with racing stripes remind that active is the way kids live. Denim is in demand as the major bottom fabric for boys. In functional carpenter and worker styles, denim is dark and handsome for dressy and washed and worn for everyday. It's a back-to-school essential! "It's a fun time to be young," Rinehart says. "And today, kidswear caters to both fashion and lifestyle. Balancing wit and whimsy, this season offers vibrant fashions for active kids."
