FCC’s Interest in PLC Moves Technology Closer to Broad Availability
Main.net Announces Compliance of PLUS™ System
(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 23, 2003 ) WASHINGTON, DC —— Main.net-Power Line Communications, Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Main.net Communications, Ltd., the world leader in power line communications (PLC), applauds today’s announcement by the Federal Communications Commission that it will review its rules for PLC, in an effort to facilitate PLC’s deployment. During the review period, systems that comply with the existing rules may continue to be deployed. The FCC’s recognition of the potential of PLC to provide a competitive, affordable broadband alternative is an important step in the full commercialization of the technology in the United States.
Main.net-Power Line Communications, Inc. also announces that Main.net’s PLUS™ system has completed field tests that demonstrate full compliance with the existing FCC rules. Main.net is the leading supplier of commercially available, proven broadband PLC technology that already complies with the existing FCC rules. The field tests were conducted by Product Safety Engineering, a laboratory with a recognized expertise in testing carrier current technology.
PLC uses already existing power grids for high-speed data transmission thereby providing customers with high-speed Internet access through electrical outlets.
In the United States, Main.net’s PLUS system is deployed in Pennsylvania, Missouri and Virginia in trials covering several square miles of utility service area, encompassing more than 2,000 homes and delivering high-speed Internet service to over 200 users in those states. Worldwide, Main.net’s PLUS system operates on over 40 utility power networks in more than 20 countries. Main.net’s installed network of PLUS systems in aggregate provide service to over 100,000 homes and are delivering broadband over power lines to more than 6,000 users.
“We are excited about the FCC’s recognition of the tremendous potential of PLC technology,” said Joseph Marsilii, President and CEO of Main.net-Power Line Communications, Inc. “Main.net PLC is a reality. We have proven the technology is easy to install, scaleable, reliable and exceeds customers’ expectations. We look forward to bringing broadband PLC to every electric outlet.”
One of Main.net’s current trials began in May 2002 in The City of Manassas, Va., whereby Manassas integrated its existing electric grid with its fiber optic network to provide PLC to residential and commercial users. “The system is extremely reliable,” said Allen Todd, Director of Utilities for the City of Manassas, “much more so than we expected from a new technology. It provides reliable Internet access. We are evaluating where we want to go now that the pilot has proven the technology is successful.
“Our users have voiced very favorable opinions about the technology,” stated Todd. “It works in every house and every receptacle.”
Main.net’s system is currently being used for commercial broadband power line service in several European countries and anticipates commercial service to begin in the United States very soon. “With our PLUS system, consumers can anticipate a low cost, highly reliable broadband service from the third wire in the home,” Marsilii added.
